The relationships suggested within the programme are at the core of the different sequences. They enable the identification of categories and, year after year, favour a thorough exploration of evolutions in photography. The street and city as playground. Les rencontres d'arles 2013 photography festival
It was created in and takes place every year from July until the end of September. One of the main reasons why I enjoy visiting the festival so much, besides the fact that its location is close to the beautiful towns of Avignon and Nimes in the South of France, is that the exhibitions are organised all around the city. Each year, new venues seem to appear, allowing the curators to dream up new shows. Indeed, when you are at the festival, regardless of how well you have pre-planned your itinerary, you will undoubtedly stumble upon an unexpected exhibit in an unusual space. This year, for example, I had some time before taking my train back to Paris and noticed a new space called Ground Zero, right by the station, that hosted two very interesting exhibitions.

Three hundred and eighty-eight artists brought nearly two thousand pieces to the exhibition, challenging the traditional role of curators in art exhibitions. Jimei District hopes to leverage the photography festival to promote not only the arts but also the development of the local economy and tourism industry—just one in a recent spate of cultural events held in Jimei, including the Strawberry Music Festival and Xiamen International Fashion Week. The Xiamen Yuanbo Garden Expo Center covers an area of nearly seven square kilometers—basically it takes two hours to walk from one end to another.
