As students settle down for the day's lesson, I present the following video and ask, "How do we know that all of these events have happened? I follow up with the question, "Well, how do we know what happened before there were people to write things down? I tell the students that today's lesson will help them understand several big ideas that scientists use to determine the history of the Earth, and begin the following presentation. Throughout the presentation, there are several opportunities for the students to Think-Pair-Share answers to the embedded questions.

Teaching about Earth's history is a challenge for all teachers. Time factors of millions and billions of years is difficult even for adults to comprehend. However, "relative" dating or time can be an easy concept for students to learn. Once they are able to manipulate the cards into the correct sequence, they are asked to do a similar sequencing activity using fossil pictures printed on "rock layer" cards.
